Article Abstract:
Smaller petroleum producing companies bias their exploration profiles to either oil or gas because of their size, and this is an important investment factor due to industry fundamentals. New technology and the ongoing sales of Gulf of Mexico leases are two factors which are leading to an increase in exploratory drilling, leading to higher capital expenditures. These stocks need to be evaluated individually before investors commit funds.

Article Abstract:
Overproduction, a mild 1998 winter, and other factors have led to lower oil prices in spite of rising worldwide petroleum demand outside of Southeast Asia. Industry profits are expected to fall 10% in 1998 and the industry will be affected by the drive for reduced emissions and the search for other energy sources. Investors will find some good stocks in this sector although the industry is not timely in 1998.
