Pitfalls of a triple-threat machine
Article Abstract:
HP's OfficeJet 600 adequately combines fax, printing and scanning capabilities, but does not match computers that focus on specific tasks. OfficeJet 600 consists of three models, the 610, 620 and 630. Print quality, in both black-and-white and color texts, performs below current standards met by numerous $300 printers. Production is limited to around two pages-per-minute. OfficeJet 600's sheet-fed scanner cannot attain top quality when operating with more powerful devices. Vertical banding appears on a computer screen at OfficeJet 600's maximum resolution of 300-dpi with 24-bit color depth. OfficeJet 600 performs well when copying color documents, although it relies heavily on a user's computer and requires up to eight minutes of production. It performs a range of fax-modem functions, such as a plain-paper fax and fax reception after running out of paper. OfficeJet 600 cannot fax in color, while included software produces mixed results.

Mind control for PC's? I think not
Article Abstract:
The Other 90% Technologies Inc claims its $140 Minddrive input peripheral is 'the first computer device operated by human thought.' The device is DOS-based, requiring Windows users to reboot their systems in DOS before using the software. It attaches to the PC's serial port and a sensor unit requires a user to place a finger in it to measure 'thoughts'. Users thoughts are measured by physical changes in the skin, such as its conductivity. The software handles binary situations, moving left, right, up or down, and changes in intensity. In one application, the user guides bubbles through on-screen apertures. The process occasionally seems to work. In comparison, a moistened piece of paper towel and a white table grape experienced similar success. The Mind Skier game challenges the user to guide a skier through a slalom course. Other programs are available.

One for all and all for one, sort of
Article Abstract:
Lexmark International's Medley multifunction I O device offers users the capabilities of a color inkjet printer, fax machine and scanner in a single system priced at about $900. The system also reduces the number of products that the user must spend time installing and configuring and requires only a power cord, printer cable and telephone wire. Medley's scanner offers a resolution of 300 dpi and although it quickly scans line art, gray scale scans can take a long time. The fax machine is sheet-fed, which limits its capability as a copier because users cannot make copies of books and small items are difficult to copy. Users can either directly fax documents or feed them into the systems' memory for later transmission. The system's printer is similar to the ExecJet and offers excellent output at moderate speeds.
