Pluralism under golden arches; from abroad, McDonald's finds value in local control
Article Abstract:
The corporate leaders at McDonald's in Oak Brook, Illinois, think they have learned a good lesson from their success overseas. The lesson is to allow some flexibility for local decision-making. For instance, in Vienna customers can get blended coffees called McCafes; in Jakarta there is rice in addition to french fries. Local tastes matter and many more new products are being readied for regional marketing in the U.S. than ever before in McDonald's history. The strength of sales and profits overseas dictate that path.

Monsanto visionary in a cubicle; could his company's special culture survive a merger?
Article Abstract:
Monsanto, the chemical company trying to become a life sciences company, is still looking for a larger partner, possibly a DuPont. DuPont has the money and size and clout for effective competition, but it also has offices instead of cubicles for managers and executives; it has a management hierarchy instead of teams; it has a more formal dress code. Monsanto would like clout, size and money without changing its own culture.
