Portable pioneers
Article Abstract:
Many blue-collar workers are now using portable computers and pen-based input technology to replace traditional notepads and clipboards when working in the field. Computers can make it easier to trace merchandise, speed deliveries and simplify making sales calls, but the new technology puts workers under new pressure by constantly measuring their productivity. Analysts say that portable computers are easier to justify for blue-collar field workers than for white-collar workers because the productivity benefits are more tangible. United Parcel Service drivers now carry electronic clipboards for tracking packages, and the Coffee, Sugar and Cocoa Exchange is testing a system for recording commodity transactions that reduces errors by cutting down on the number of people who handle each transaction and by instantly analyzing information. Problems with the use of portable computers in the field include protecting the devices from bad weather and other damaging conditions and overcoming workers' fear of technology.
