What's going into the landfill?
Article Abstract:
Research undertaken at the 16 largest landfills in Missouri between Oct 1998 and May 1999 indicates that municipal solid waste accounts for around 60% of the total waste stream. The average proportion of waste from construction sites was 5.5%, but there was considerable variation between landfills. Industrial waste made up around 12% of the total waste. Among other waste materials, one of the largest items was soil, often used by landfills for a portion of their daily cover when available.

Power plays
Article Abstract:
Operating costs can be minimized by replacing inefficient lighting systems and upgrading air-conditioning ones that could save a 50-man office up to $10,000 per year. Electric lighting costs can be reduced by keeping lights clean, upgrading flourescent lights with new ones and by using high-intensity-discharge sodium lamps. Airconditioning costs can also be reduced by preventing heat entry, using a thermal-storage system and by switching to gas- or steam-powered air conditioning.
