How established firms respond to threatening technologies
Article Abstract:
Product innovations which could lead to new industries pose a threat to established firms. The evaluation of upcoming technology and its advantages is integral in the assessment of technological threats. However, the less obvious but more important need is to appraise the nature of the emergent industry and how competition may differ. One alternative that can be taken by managers of threatened firms is to bring their firms into the new industry. This entails decisions regarding timing of entry, magnitude of involvement, extent of integration between traditional and new product management and the competitive strategy for the new business.
