Programs brighten day for PC users without Windows
Article Abstract:
Borland International's Quattro Pro 4.0, a spreadsheet software package available by mail order for approximately $320, provides MS-DOS users a graphical environment without using Microsoft Corp's Microsoft Windows. Quattro Pro 4.0 will run on microcomputers with as little as 512Kbytes of RAM, and does not require a large amount of disc storage space. The software package can run in either a character-based mode or a graphical mode, which requires a color display. The graphical interface features pull down menus, as well as speedbar buttons that automate many functions such as formulas, calculations, font selection, numerical format selection and data movement. The graphical mode also features intelligent graphs that allows values to be changed without altering the original data. Quattro Pro 4.0 has a steep learning curve, and does not have all of the features provided by Microsoft Windows-based products. However, the product does provide flexibility for users with low-memory microcomputers.

More doors open for Windows users who run spreadsheets
Article Abstract:
Lotus Development Corp's new Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows 4.0 matches the important features of its rivals and adds some new ones. The spreadsheet offers competition to such rival Microsoft Windows spreadsheets as Borland International's Quattro Pro for Windows and Microsoft's Excel. Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows 4.0 sells for about $300, or $99 as an upgrade. Version 4.0 has such features as Excel's automatic fill-in, in which typing in 'Monday' will automatically generate the remaining days of the week, and Quattro Pro's notebook style of organizing multi-page spreadsheets. 'What-if' analysis has been made easier by the ability to store multiple values in a cell or range of cells. This feature is far superior to anything offered by Excel or Quattro Pro. Version 4.0 is networkable and includes a host of minor improvements that make using the product easier.

Quattro Pro creates good spreadsheet at bargain price
Article Abstract:
Borland International Inc's well-designed Quattro Pro for Windows 5.0 spreadsheet package is now being offered at a rock-bottom price of $49.95. Version 5.0 is a full-featured spreadsheet, with a host of fundamental features that is comparable to those offered by Lotus's 1-2-3 and Microsoft's Excel for Windows. Missing from the new Quattro Pro is the ability to share data over a network. Among the program's shortcomings is that its toolbar is very difficult to customize, and its data-modeling feature is difficult to use. While the new Quattro Pro borrows ideas from competing program Lotus Improv, such as the ability to quickly change and rearrange data, the Borland product does not allow users to edit data directly in the cell in which the data exists.
