Rebel factions capture Afghan capital; interim council assumes power
Article Abstract:
An alliance of rebel groups took control of the Afghan capital Kabul on April 25, 1992. Guerrilla leaders have agreed to form a 50-member interim council to rule the country until democratic elections are arranged. This plan was opposed by the Party of Islam, which called for a strict Islamic government.

Afghan President Najibullah steps down; successor offers power to rebels
Article Abstract:
Abdul Rahim Hatif was selected to be interim president of Afghanistan Apr 19, 1992, following the resignation of Najibullah. Hatif immediately offered to turn over control of the government to a coalition of rebel forces advancing on the capital city of Kabul.

Calif. speaker Brown installs successor

The California Legislature's Assembly voted 40-38 to elect Republican Doris Allen to replace Willie Brown as speaker on June 5, 1995, with all Democrats backing Allen. Republican Jim Brulte received all of the chamber's Republican votes, except Allen's.
