The smaller companies in the retail building supply industry are facing economic difficulties as the industry leaders continue to dominate and warehouse supercenters are becoming more evident. Sales and service formats are being adjusted by some members of this sector, but those companies which serve the professional builder or contractor remain fragmented. These stocks are appealing for the year 2000, and for the years 2002 to 2004, but investors need to be selective in their choices.
