The Industrial Relations Commission (IRC) says that increases in the minimum wage are a blunt instrument to improve the lot of low-paid workers. The movement of about 80,000 Victorian workers from state to federal jurisdiction that takes place on January 1, 2005 will involve increases in wages and other conditions.

Riddle of the $12 pay grenade

The Australian government has proposed a minimum $12-a-week pay increase for low-wage workers. Employer groups are lobbying for a lesser increase or none at all, but they will most likely end up paying even more than $12 a week.
