Seeing the big picture: the influence of industry, diversification, and business strategy on performance
Article Abstract:
Much of the strategic management literature separates industry, corporate, and business levels of analysis, and empirical studies tend to examine these levels independently, not addressing how industry context influences diversification and how diversification strategy might influence business strategies. This article examines the interactions of industry characteristics, diversification, and business strategy in an integrated framework and offers a comprehensive model illustrating how these factors combine to influence performance. We tested the model using data from a sample of Fortune 500 firms. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Business Unit Strategy, Managerial Characteristics, and Business Unit Effectiveness at Strategy Implementation
Article Abstract:
Stragegic business units (SBUs) are the divisions comprising the firm. The SBU's general manager, its internal organization, and its relationship to the corporate parent, all affect SBU's effectiveness. The strategic mission of the parent company, and the implementation of strategy in the SBU are the subjects of this study. An SBU manager's willingness to take risks, and tolerance for ambiguity are examined. The qualities of risk and ambiguity tolerance are seen as advantages in a built SBU but are disadvantages in the harvest SBU.

Strategy, control systems, and resource sharing: effects on business-unit performance
Article Abstract:
Focusing on strategic business units (SBUs) in diversified firms, this study investigated the relationships among control systems, resource sharing, and competitive strategies and their interactive effects on SBU performance. Empirical results indicate that output control and high resource sharing are associated with higher effectiveness for a low-cost strategy and behavior control and high resource sharing are associated with higher effectiveness for a differentiation strategy.
