Self-esteem and task performance in quality circles
Article Abstract:
Quality circles are composed of small groups of workers who work in the same department and gather on a regular basis to identify, examine, and resolve problems which relate to the work environment. Quality circles are neither effective nor ineffective in and of themselves; the effectiveness of the program will depend be determined by individual and organizational factors. A successful quality circle program will be based on a group of workers who feel that their participation and support will aid the organization, and who are fully trained in group dynamics and problem-solving techniques. A survey of 66 workers at one large computer production company shows that self-esteem levels for the workers in each quality circle did have a positive relationship to the group's task performance.

Article Abstract:
Layoffs do have a specific psychological and productivity effects on those remaining at the job. A test was conducted at a large state university involving 145 undergraduates. Results show that when layoffs are conducted according to merit, the survivors' performance was greater than when layoffs are random. In the case of random layoffs, survivors increased their output after the event. Both findings are concurrent with the equity theory.
