Shipments of workstation computers increased 25% world-wide in 1994
Article Abstract:
A study of world-wide workstation sales conducted by Dataquest reports that overall workstation sales increased 25% in 1994, with 779,000 units sold, as compared with 622,000 units sold in 1993. The results confound the predictions of market analysts, who predicted that growth would slow to about the 10% level due to the competitive encroachment of high-end PCs. The strong growth in the workstation market is attributed to a combination of a robust economy and increasing demands for processing power on the part of workstation users. Workstations powered by such high-performance processors as the DEC Alpha have been able to maintain a strong performance lead over PC rivals. The significant exception to the boom is Sun Microsystems Inc, which, despite an increase in unit sales from 237,000 to 282,000, saw its industry-leading market share fall from 38.1% in 1993 to 36.2% in 1994. Big winners in the workstation race include HP, which saw its market share grow from 19.1% in 1993 to 19.8% in 1994, and IBM, which saw its share rise from 11% in 1993 to 12.9% in 194.

Cider-space; after an Apple buyout, Sun could be mighty in Internet computers; workstation king has means and motive to do a deal, but cultures may not jell; getting hyper with Java
Article Abstract:
Apple considers a takeover bid from Sun Microsystems that may represent the last hope for a financially troubled computer company that has posted increasingly large losses, including a $69 million loss in 4th qtr 1995. Sun's reported offer of $4 billion for Apple is only slightly above the company's stock value, and the small premium is indicative of Apple's recent decline in value. At a Jan 23, 1996 stockholders meeting, Apple CEO Michael Spindler and Chmn A.C. Markkula declined to confirm or deny rumors of the pending merger, fielding questions from an angry collection of shareholders. Apple's advantage in the graphics design market and Sun's commanding presence in the server market promise to provide a combined company with a significant advantage in future Internet-based development. Sun hopes that its Java programming language continues its developmental penetration.

Hyundai plans to move its division for personal computers to the US
Article Abstract:
Hyundai Electronics Industries Co announces plans to relocate its entire microcomputer division from Seoul, South Korea to San Jose, California in the US. Both the division headquarters and related marketing, product development and management operations will be moved, and some computers will be assembled in the US. The move marks a dramatic reversal of the 1980s trend toward Asian computer manufacture. Countries such as Korea have low labor costs and growing mass-production skills that let them produce low-cost microcomputer clones. This strategy has not served Asia well in recent years because it cannot keep up with the rapid pace of change in the American-dominated computer industry; new products become dated quickly, and Asian firms find it hard to meet US consumers' changing demands.
