A practical scheduling method for multiclass production systems with setups
Article Abstract:
A manufacturing work center where a single machine or service processes many different types or classes of items is used to illustrate the application of a simple approach for the dynamic scheduling of products appropriate for such an environment. This heuristic procedure, called HEUR, is novel in that it determines which queue to serve next by multiplying the customers' ages by a 'scale factor.' It is totally defined by the Queue Greedy, System Greedy, Exhaustive and Patient policies. The model works well in terms of mean waiting time as well as waiting-time variance and the outer percentiles of waiting time. The robust performance of HEUR suggests that it may be the 'best available' tool for the dynamic scheduling of products in a multiclass production system.

Optimal updating of forecasts for the timing of future events
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze a forecasting application that predicts aircraft departure times and anticipates possible air traffic congestions. The forecasting application utilizes real-time information to bring up to date event time forecasts and to generate error costs. It also supports the balance of costs associated with accumulated forecast errors and the costs of forecast updates. Moreover, the forecasting model uses a weighting function to indicate forecast accuracy. It also accommodates models for locating maximum sequential forecasts that are represented by a fixed update schedule. Results indicated the benefits of using optimal updating procedures during an increase in average take-off time and prior uncertainties.
