The largest hundred listed companies in the Australian stock market have been outperformed by shares in small listed companies, called 'small-cap' stocks, by 8.5 percentage points since March 2003. A rise in the small-cap stocks is related to healthy economy, a renewed confidence among the investors in higher-risk investments, quick returns for the investors and retail investors returning to equities.
