Smile! Here comes videoconferencing - and business meetings may never be the same
Article Abstract:
Videoconferencing capabilities are changing the face of company meetings, allowing employees to attend who were restricted from travel and cutting out extraneous talking due to the more formal nature of a video conference. It is also imposing a new etiquette for meetings, even to what participants may wear. Because of the constraints of image generation on current systems, busy patterns do not resolve well in transmission. The slight time delay in international transmission does not allow for talking over another person, imposing a greater politeness. Disadvantages include adjusting to the need to be in camera so that a disembodied voice is not transmitted to another meeting site. Cameras responsive to sound may solve this problem. Another aspect is the more spontaneous nature of a videoconference that can be called at short notice, rather than having to wait for travel to take place. More people can participate in a meeting when travel is obviated, but a higher degree of readiness and attention is also required. The disadvantages of not being in physical proximity in a meeting may be countered by the ability to defuse disagreements long distance.

Texas approves a 'textbook' on videodisks
Article Abstract:
The Texas State Board of Education adopts a videodisk-based curriculum program that competes with standard textbooks in the state's educational system. The program, Windows on Science, was developed by Optical Data Corp and will compete with two other makers of standard textbooks in Texas' $40 million elementary-school science book market. Some industry observers believe that Optical Data will capture 30 percent to 35 percent of the market when school districts make their purchase decisions for the 1991-1992 school year. The Optical Data videodisk system introduced students to a topic with photographs and motion pictures via a large television screen; students follow up with worksheets, readings from pamphlets and laboratory projects.
