Software firms are expected to post mixed results for March 31 quarter
Article Abstract:
Industry analysts are predicting mixed results for software vendors Microsoft, Lotus and Borland for the quarter ending Mar 31, 1995. Rick Sherlund from Goldman, Sachs & Co, predicts that Microsoft will record 3rd qtr net income of $375 million, or 60 cents per share. This is an increase from the $336 million, or 55 cents per share recorded in the same period a year earlier, with adjustments made for a 2-for-1 stock split. Mary Meeker of Morgan Stanley & Co, has a bleaker projection for Lotus. She believes that the desktop application company will only break even in the latest quarter, compared to the same period in 1994 when the company reported $21 million in net income. Mike Kwatinetz of Paine Webber Group predicts that Borland will have a rough 4th qtr with revenue hitting the $47 million mark, down from the $51 million recorded for the same period in 1994.

Software firms likely to post higher earnings; greater use of networks by companies boosts latest quarterly profits
Article Abstract:
Computer software companies, particularly those focused on networking, are expected to report increased profits for the quarter ended Sep 30, 1996. The increased profits are driven by the growing acceptance by substantial corporate users to use client/server networks, which connect powerful workstations and desktop PCs. Microsoft is expected to report $585 million in earnings for the quarter, up from $499 million in the same quarter of 1995. Netscape is also benefiting from large firms' increasing comfort with computer networks, and is expected to report earnings of $6.9 million for the quarter. PeopleSoft is likely to report earnings of $14.5 million, nearly double its earnings in the same quarter of the previous year. BMC Software is expected to report $32 million in earnings for the quarter, on $122 million in revenue.

Software makers are expected to post solid profit gains for December quarter
Article Abstract:
Major software vendors appear to have leveraged new products and proactive sales strategies into substantial profit increases in the quarter ending Dec 1995, and the outlook for 1996 appears generally positive. Microsoft's profits were up 40% to $524 million, or some 82 cents a share. The largest software company enjoyed increasing sales of its heavily marketed Windows 95 operating system and appears poised for strong Windows NT sales in 1996 as well. Microsoft's profit margins are $65 to $75 on each Windows 95 package sold and $225 for Windows NT. Sybase Inc's profits were $5.9 million, or 8 cents per share, drastically below the 52 cent-per-share profits of a year ago. However, the database vendor's new System 11 product is likely to gain back much ground, helping the company to strong results late in 1996 or in 1997.
