AT&T challenges the Bell companies; Allen outlines plans to take big part of local market over next several years

AT&T Chmn Robert E. Allen announces his company's intention to capture a minimum of one-third of the $90 billion local telephone market, strengthened by the restructuring the company is currently undergoing. AT&T will leverage the experience and capital reward it has garnered for the last decade as it enters the local markets in all 50 states and offers consumers a variety of services. AT&T hopes to provide $100 packages of Internet, wireless, long-distance and local phone service to many present customers that normally spend just $25 per month, but AT&T will have to improve the rate at which it delivers these services. AT&T will continue to pressure the RBOCs for leased access to their local lines. This right that is promised to AT&T under recently passed telecommunications laws that require local companies to initially provide line-access to long-distance firms.

AT&T forms two new global units from communications services business
Article Abstract:
AT&T restructures its communications services business into the Consumer Services and Business Services units in an effort to serve its business and long-distance phone customers better. The communications giant, though retaining its dominance of the long-distance telephone market, is reeling from the stiff competition posed by domestic and international carriers, which offer global communications services for corporate users. AT&T's new Consumer Services unit is headed by Robert J. Ranalli and will handle international consumer communications. It includes Personal Communications Services which will explore business opportunities in the area of wireless communications. The Business Services unit, with John E. Berndt at its helm, will concentrate on corporate customers. Communications services account for almost 50 percent of AT&T's $44 billion annual revenue.
