Sparks fly at falling Marks

The British clothing and food department store Marks and Spencer PLC (M&S) is restructuring in the wake of falling profits. Profits for the 1998 fiscal year have dropped from Pounds Sterling 1.1 billion to Pounds Sterling 655 million, and chief executive Peter Salsbury plans to cut about 400 workers from the head office total of 3300 employees. Thirty-three of 100 senior managers have been fired. Salsbury says the company will focus on improving customer service and employee relations.

Lend Lease wants to be top of the shops

Lend Lease is targeting growth in Europe with the initiation of several British-based redevelopment projects and the launching of a $2 billion retail and leisure center. Projects include a $373 million renovation of Scotland's Overgate retail center and a 50% interest in reworking a Hampshire shopping center. The Bluewater retail and leisure center is due to open in Mar. 1999.

The toiletries firm focuses on hair-care and skin-care products that have been made from natural ingredients, none of which are tested on animals. The business has expanded to 1500 stores in 47 different countries, with sales that have reached 31.7 pounds sterling.
