A Melbourne accountant and financial projects consultant, Julian Challingsworth, believes that chief financial officers in Australia are underestimating the impact of the change to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). CFOEs are underestimating the changes required to financial systems and software, the number of internal divisions within a company that would be affected, and the extent of changes would involve renegotiating contracts with external parties, such as banks.

The strategy adopted by Stephen Picton to make Telecorp, the biggest phone card competitor to Telstra, a success is discussed. The poor state of the market brought several challenges to Picton and his new company, including the need for flexibility in terms of planning for capital and tight funding and the technological issue of dealing with the 'hassle factor' of using pre-paid cards, which need to be easier to recharge and dial extra numbers.
