State prisoners' appeals limited
Article Abstract:
The Supreme Court ruled that federal courts are not required to hear challenges from state prisoners, even those having evidence that their cases were not properly presented by their lawyers. The dissenting opinion argued that the court was making a fundamental change in the law of habeas corpus.

Habeas corpus backed in 'Miranda' cases
Article Abstract:
The Supreme Court, in Withrow versus Williams, held that a convicted murderer in Michigan would be given a habeas corpus review. The Court, in Brecht versus Abrahamson, refused to grant a review because the violation of the defendant's rights did not significantly affect the jury's verdict.

Inmate's death-row appeal granted
Article Abstract:
The Supreme Court ruled on Apr 1, 1996, that Lonchar should be granted a writ of habeas corpus. Lonchar sought the writ so that he could be executed by lethal injection rather than the electric chair. He requested this so that his organs could be donated after his death.
