Sugar hits the spot
Article Abstract:
The recent spurt in sugar prices has brought in much-needed relief to the sugar cane growers in Queensland. The region recorded deficient rainfalls for 5 consecutive years before this season, consequently the allocations for irrigation are down, and so is the sugar production. To add to the woes, the US free-trade agreement completely avoided sugar industry but the drought weather persisting in India has created a demand for sugar, which is the reason for its price rise.

Commonwealth bank, Rabobank, National Australia Bank and Suncorp Metway are taking a tough approach by increasing their debt to the sugar industry. The long term prospects for sugar industry are discussed and the changes that a reconstruction package can make in the success of sugar industry are mentioned.
