Summations are offered in Microsoft case; antitrust trial's verdict seen later this year
Article Abstract:
Final arguments and summations were heard Sep. 21, 1999 in the US Justice Department's antitrust case against Microsoft Corp. The case, which has been ongoing for a year, ended with little ceremony on the part of Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson. He is expected to rule on the case before the Nov. 1999 Thanksgiving holiday and his verdict will depend on which lawyer's presented the strongest case. Attorneys on both sides were scornful of one another's cases up until the end. The government is sure of its strong case against Microsoft saying that the company used its monopolistic position to stop competitive innovation, drive prices up and restrict consumer choice, and will continue to do so if it is allowed to win the case. Although no new evidence was presented during the final-argument phase, the government attorneys are confident that their copious documentary evidence will win out.
