Sun Microsystems exceeds forecasts on 2nd-period net
Article Abstract:
Sun Microsystems Inc reports higher than expected net income for 2nd qtr 1990, giving some analysts reason to believe that Sun's troubles in 1989 are behind them. However, others feel Sun must still overcome problems with distribution of products and transitions into new products. Particularly, analysts say Sun has done a poor job of selling its low-end workstations. The report covering the quarter ended Dec 29, 1989 shows a net income of $20.2 million down 31 percent from the same period in the previous year. Revenue for the most recent quarter is at $595.4 million up from the $448.3 million posted a year ago. Most analysts agree Sun appears to be on the right track and Sun stock is up 87.5 cents, closing at $17.375 on the day.

Amdahl's profit tumbled 42% in 4th quarter
Article Abstract:
Amdahl Corp reports its net income fell 42 percent, while revenue climbed 15 percent in 4th qtr 1989. Although the decline is steep, the results are slightly better than analysts expected for Amdahl in a sluggish market with competitive pricing. One problem for Amdahl is that its profit margins are being squeezed on its line of mainframe computers, which account for 65 to 70 percent of its revenue. Further, competition from IBM is forcing prices down, while unfavorable foreign exchange rates have put upward pressure on the cost of parts Amdahl buys from Fujitsu Ltd. Amdahl also states that significant expenditures on product development have cut into profits.

Sun Microsystems reports a profit for its 4th quarter
Article Abstract:
Sun Microsystems Inc posted a 1990 fiscal 4th qtr net income of $49.1 million, or 51 cents a share, as compared with a $20.3 million loss, or 25 cents a share, during the same period in 1989. The computer workstation manufacturer's 4th fiscal qtr, which ended on Jun 30, 1990, exceeded expectations of even the most optimistic analysts and has shown how Sun has tightened its grip on the workstation market. Revenue for the 4th qtr was $700.1 million, which represents a 62 percent rise from the $431.2 million reported in 1989. Net income rose 83 percent to $111.2 million, or $1.21 a share, from $60.8 million, or 76 cents a share, in 1989.
