Supporting quick response through scheduling of make-to-stock production/inventory systems
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine a scheduling problem in a make-to-stock environment where individual job completion measures are unimportant. An extensive set of simulation experiments based on the operating conditions observed at Wayne Pump, a division of Campbell Hausfeld and maker of several different families of pumps, were conducted to compare scheduling rules. Results showed that a simple rule that sequenced production based on inventory status significantly performed better than the fixed-cycle policy.

A note on 'An Approximate Solution to Deterministic Kanban Systems.'(a multistage production scheduling and inventory control system)
Article Abstract:
Kanban systems work according to a just-in-time concept of production schedules and inventory controls. The research showed the infeasibility of Moeeni and Chang's (1990) heuristic solution to a particular use of a deterministic kanban system. An alternative heuristic is developed which achieves feasible solutions by rounding up the values of decision variables of the linear programming of the corrected formulation. This alternative model can provide more feasible solutions to kanban design problems.

A note on 'An Approximate Solution to Deterministic Kanban Systems': a commentary and further insights
Article Abstract:
Further review of the Moeeni and Chang model of solving kanban systems' problems showed that the model is not intended mathematically to describe kanban systems. The review also showed that Moeeni and Chang's (1990) heuristic procedures are designed for determining near optimal solutions to deterministic kanban systems.
