TI to sell memory-chip unit to Micron
Article Abstract:
Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) will sell its memory-chip business to Micron Technology Inc. Texas Instruments will also lay off approximately 8% of its work force. The sale and work force cut reflect plunging chip prices. South Korean and Taiwanese companies have recently pushed down prices, pummeling the entire market. TI lost $129 million dollars on its memory-chip business in the first quarter of 1998. Micron will pay $610 million in stock and notes for TI's memory assets and will assume an additional $190 million of debt associated with TI's Italian memory-chip business.
