Teleglobe, Excel to use U.S. sales tactic abroad

Teleglobe Inc. and Excel Communications Inc. are planning a merger valued at $3.1 billion. The merger would make it one of the nation's biggest long distance companies. The new company will retain the Teleglobe name. The merger is considered a pooling of interests. They hope to export to Japan and Western Europe by using the "relationship sales" system pioneered by Amway Corp. The "relationship sales" system was used successfully in the United States by Excel to sell long distance services.

Caribiner International Inc. said it would post earnings for the 1998 second quarter that would be approximately 22% lower than what had been expected. The company reported that its revenue for 1997 more than doubled to $342.2 million. Questionable accounting and rapid expansion are believed to be the cause for the drop in earnings. Since 1996, Caribiner has acquired 15 companies. The company has created a network of 28 offices and 3,500 workers.

Davel to buy PhoneTel, plans swap of stock
Article Abstract:
Davel Communications Group Inc. announced that it will purchase PhoneTel Technologies Inc. in a $63 million exchange of stock. Under the agreement, Davel will assume debt worth up to $153 million. The merged entity will be called Davel Communications Inc. and will be operated by Davel's senior management. PhoneTel stockholders will receive $3.08 for every Davel share in exchange for each of PhoneTel's 20.3 million outstanding shares.
