Telstra has become increasingly influential since the mid-1990s, and can now be seen as the most vertically integrated telecommunications firm of any country belonging to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Telstra's domination has restricted sector innovation and the introduction of new services in Australia.

South Korea leads the world in broadband penetration with 42.5% of household penetration last year, compared to the US's 8%. One of the most important differences in these countries and with corporations is critical mass.
