Telstra sale: a phony line on debt?
Article Abstract:
Australia's Commonwealth Government claims that the sale of its share in Telstra Corp., the satellite communications company, would greatly reduce Australia's public debt, although economists differ. A sale of Telstra Corp. would generate about $60 billion. Many economists feel Australia's net debt of $71 billion is insignificant and that the government will lose a steady stream of revenue if Telstra is sold.

The currency advantage
Article Abstract:
Most economists predict that the Australian dollar will continue to recover from its 10-month downward slide at the beginning of 2000, and some predict a significant surge in commodity exports for the 2000-2001 period. The chief economist at HSBC sees the fall in the dollar as the ideal opportunity to tackle Australia's account deficit, which requires major capital inflow from overseas investors.

Strong dollar a weak link
Article Abstract:
The Australian dollar is climbing fast and is threatening to weaken a strong export culture. Austrade chief economist Tim Harcourt suggests that the growth of Australia's trading partners is a much more important factor in the performance of exports than the value of the Australian dollar.
