Low inflation and strong debt and equity markets have made several companies prone to takeovers in 1998. Acquisitions and mergers worth $43.8 billion Australian took place in Australia in 1997, a major increase over the top record of $18.5 billion in acquisitions and mergers during 1988. The financial services and healthcare sectors are expected to be the source of most acquisition and merger activity during 1998.
