Broadcom will buy SiByte for about $2 billion

Broadcom Corp. is buying Sybite Inc. for about $2 billion in stock to boost its arsenal of communications semiconductors. SiByte's only product is the Mercurian network processor which are used in routers and data stations for modem applications. SiByte, led by Dan Dobberpuhl has 1.3 units' worth of contracts. Broadcom's chief Henry Nicholas feels SiByte's engineering group is the best he's ever seen.

Texas Instruments to acquire Unitrode, a chip maker, for $1.2 billion in stock
Article Abstract:
Texas Instruments' acquisition of Unitrode should bolster it's digital signal processor business with power-management chips, which among other things, will manage batter consumption in phones and computers. TI is on track to raise the analog chip line to 160 chips by the year 2000. Unitrode chief Robert Richardson has been remaking the company since 1997, and is enthusiastic about the deal.
