Textile industry
Article Abstract:
Earnings and stock prices in the domestic textile industry in the US began to fall in 1997 after the Asian economic crisis led to inexpensive textile imports into the US. The economics of the industry have begun to improve with several companies increasing their operations in Mexico and vertical integration in the domestic industry. There are few timely stocks in the textile industry in 1999, but long-term investors will find several that are appealing over the next three to five years.

Article Abstract:
The collapse of local currencies in Asia has allowed textile industry prices to fall in the first half of 1998, thus putting competitive pressure on the domestic US industry. However, the North American Free Trade Agreement, the reluctance to import from Asia, and declining raw material costs should help margins, along with consolidation in the industry. Investors need to focus on the more competitive and capital-intensive textile industry stocks.
