The PC as prototype problem-solver
Article Abstract:
The Glidden Coatings and Resins Division of Imperial Chemical Industries uses personal computers to design accounting system prototypes, as opposed to using the systems department to modify existing mainframe programs. Having the accounting department develop its own prototypes saves time for the computer programmers and for the computer system itself. PC-based prototypes can also serve as a temporary solution if a larger problem threatens the system. Developing a prototype helps to improve the computer literacy of the personnel in the accounting department. The disadvantages of using a PC include lack of data security and lack of systems uniformity. An example of how Glidden created a PC prototype to solve an accounting problem is provided.

Controlling costs with a database system
Article Abstract:
Microcomputers combined with database systems can be used to help job-oriented service firms with an efficient and effective way of achieving an integrated, computerized accounting system. Such systems can support financial accounting, cost control, and managerial decision-making. The experience of the Gallup Organization Inc is used to illustrate the possibilities in this regard. Gallup purchased dBase III database software from Ashton-Tate, and used it on an IBM-AT computer. Gallup's example can be followed by other firms that are labor-intensive or that have trouble measuring the quality and quantity of their output.
