The Striking Price
Article Abstract:
Investors are increasingly using puts on stock indices to protect their upward-moving stocks. Placing puts on the stocks themselves is not very effective because then the stocks' tax holding periods are lost. It is important that investors using puts on indices find the index that best matches their portfolio. The nature of the stocks in the index is an important factor in choosing an index, as is the index's volatility. Using futures rather than cash puts may have tax advantages.
