The Trader
Article Abstract:
Changes in the nature of the personal computer market are forcing computer stocks to fall. Increasing competition has made it difficult for investors to predict which companies will succeed and which fail. Market-leaders like Apple and Coleco are beginning to lose their dominance of the market. IBM, however, is likely to remain the dominant figure among computer manufacturers. Marketing expertise and price-cutting have become among the most important factors in a computer firm's success or failure. Mattel is apparently giving up on its computer division as a result of mounting losses.

Some Like It Hot
Article Abstract:
August of 1983 was in general a poor month for the stock market. However, a drought in the Midwest threatened to drive up farm prices, causing the stock of farm service companies to jump. Other types of stocks that performed well included oil, aluminum, and home computer stocks. Two firms, Metromedia and American Medical Buildings, suffered declines in the value of their stock following unfavorable stories in Barron's. Many of the new issues that appeared in 1983 have begun to run into trouble.

Bull Session
Article Abstract:
Several hundred stock analysts met recently at the annual get-together of the Financial Analysts Federation. Most represented small institutions, banks, and insurance companies. The general belief held that stock prices could not move up until interest rates fall. Most of the participants were bullish on the market. One speaker believes that tax increases are inevitable after the election, and that rising interest rates will worsen the international debt problem.
