The context and process of organizational transformation - Cadbury Limited in its sector
Article Abstract:
Organizational changes at chocolate confectionery company Cadbury Limited between 1966 and 1983 are examined for their application to other cases of corporate change. Data used for the analysis were derived from 50 lengthy interviews with Cadbury senior management, engineers, trade union officers, and shop stewards. Company reports, such as the minutes from management committee meetings and long range plans, were also used. Conclusions drawn from the Cadbury case include: strategic models in the chocolate confectionery sector co-existed until market conditions forced organizational changes to remain competitive; transformation was preceded by a long period of analysis of alternatives; existing corporate culture was malleable enough to allow for change; and the transformation process was so gradual that no clear beginning or end could be perceived.
