The dominant position of the Gartner Group
Article Abstract:
Gartner Group Inc.'s Gartner's Year 2000 research project for Year 2000 computer problems hold's the industry's highest regard. Gartner was the first information-technology company to call attention to the Y2K problem in so public a way, in front of Congress, and with so high a price of the fixing, possibly $600 billion. Year 2000 research director Louis Marcoccio finds himself in almost the role of a celebrity, talking to scores of journalists, foreign audiences and being featured on television worldwide. However, Gartner's stock is down 37% this last 12 months, mostly because of a complicated stock buyback plan and concerns over the growth of the rest of the business. Nevertheless, Gartner owns disproportionate influence around the world.

Companies prepare for Year 2000; as deadline nears, averting disaster is the highest technology priority; much of the work may come at the expense of other projects
Article Abstract:
The Year 2000 computer compliance problem will require companies to make major investments. The lion's share of the spending will be in preparation to prevent the problem in the first place by investing in new enterprise software programs. Spending in 1999 will also focus on malfunctions that crop up as many companies open fiscal Year 2000 on the first of the months of Apr., July and Sep. Other information technology expenditures will drop as companies wrestle with Year 2000 compliance and a shortage of skilled workers to handle other IT projects. The only technology spending not expected to dive is that for electronic commerce applications which allows companies to do business over the Internet.
