The federal government: accounting's last frontier
Article Abstract:
The federal government promises to increase its fiscal accountability to the levels achieved by responsible publicly held corporations and management accountants have a role to play in this transformation. This means that all accounting transactions would be filed in a timely and precise manner in a general ledger system that is based on generally accepted accounting principles. This would also entail preparation and auditing at all 24 major federal agencies and the whole federal government every fiscal year. Several laws are already put in place to achieve this goal, including the Chief Financial Officers Act of 1990, the Federal Credit Reform Act of 1990, the Government Performance and Results Act of 1993 and the Government Management Reform Act of 1994. The faster that full accountability is achieved in the federal government, the quicker the demands of the public can be served.
