The importance of environmental cost accounting
Article Abstract:
The First Annual International Congress on Reverse Logistics Management was held in New Orleans, LA, on Sep. 18 to 20, 1996. Speakers at the event, sponsored by the Society of Logistics Engineers, focused on the important contribution of accounting for environmental issues. Keynote speaker Marc Epstein of Stanford University stressed that the emergence of activity-based costing provides an opportunity to minimize environmental costs and increase profitability. Chris Stinson of the University of Texas at Austin commented that environmental accounting is not limited to particular accounting areas and standards, and predicted that retroactive liability for product takeback would become the next major contingent liability. Other speakers were Jeannie Wood of Arthur Andersen, Jeffrey Park of Prime Management Assoc., Jack Azar of Xerox Corp., and Ron Giuntini of CATTAN Services Group.
