Article Abstract:
Many self-managed superannuation funds invested in Westpoint mezzanine finance companies, which took the investors for ride. Many individuals lost substantial amount of their retirement funds. Some investors went so far as taking a second mortgage on their homes to invest in Westpoint. In this context, risks to superannuation funds from wrong financial advisor are highlighted.

The number of companies who manage the employee pension funds have come down to 1674 in 2003 from 4161 in 1995, and expected to come down in the future. The superannuation funds are outsourced from dedicated firms handling the services, which are professionally managed, and relieves the corporations from the burden of managing the fund.
