Freeloader Inc's Freeloader 2.0 software saves Web users time when downloading graphics from multimedia Web sites. The company's software will automatically download pages from specified Web sites and store them on the user's hard drive. When the user accesses them they display immediately, without the wait generally associated with using a modem to view the Web page. Freeloader 2.0 is available free from Freeloader's Web site at www.freeloader.com. The company depends on advertising for its revenue. Drawbacks to Freeloader's service include the need to download the pages several minutes to an hour before viewing them, which means some news could be outdated before it reaches the user.There are several companies employing the off line approach to Web searching, including Webex, Netriever and Surfbot. Pointcast Inc is the leading Internet broadcaster; its Pointcast Network is a screen saver that automatically updates news and personalized Web information from content providers.

Expanding the boundaries of E-mail; reaching out and touching someone far away via the Internet

Several companies are entering a potentially lucrative new market, offering E-mail, fax, paging and voice communications over the Internet. Netcentric's low-cost Fax Storm service employs the Internet to lower faxing costs. JFAX Personal telecom Inc is the only company currently offering these features in a service that can be established in less than 24 hours. The company, which was started by rock musician Jaye Muller and his record producer, recognized the need for a cheaper, and more secure, way to send and receive faxes while on the road. JFAX's service is designed to make the virtual office a reality. It took two years to develop the necessary software and the startup has not yet made a profit. It also faces potentially intense competition from the major telephone companies.

Web retailers finding allies at sites with nothing to sell

To become more well known on the Internet, on-line retail stores have begun linking to information sites that are fully devoted to text, graphics, pictures and music but have no retail component. This practice is referred to as on-line franchising, syndicated selling and associates programs. It provides retailers the chance to inform Web travellers of their sites, and where they can find products that interest them. The information sites that provide this service receive sales commissions for items sold via the link. By using syndicated selling, retailers are able to market their site to consumers according to their areas of interest. Critics wonder at the accuracy of information sites' product reviews, when the site will make a commission on the product if it is sold.
