The author describes growing up fascinated with her brother, who wrote stories and drew his own comic books. She describes writing as 'turning over rocks,' and hoping there's something interesting underneath. She finds most modern novels to be 'shlovels' - self-help books in fiction formats.

History: it's still about stories
Article Abstract:
History as a general interest topic took some time to be accepted by the public. Part of the reluctance stemmed from methods and language used to write books about history. The success of the Oxford History of the United States series stems from its use of a narrative style.
