Thomson to enter European market for telephone gear
Article Abstract:
The French state-owned electronics company Thomson SA plans to sell telephone equipment in Europe. A market-sharing accord with Alcatel Alsthom SA, signed in 1983, had formerly kept Thomson SA from selling telephones in Europe. Thomson also plans to sell telephone answering machines, facsimile machines and cellular telephone equipment. Analysts believe that Thomson will have difficulty achieving success in the already mature telephone equipment industry, but they see opportunities for the electronics firm in telephone-related technologies. Thomson will not receive public funding for its telephone venture; its consumer electronics division is investing $30 million for a three-year period. Much of the industrial work will be subcontracted out to smaller French firms.

Return of the natives: Asia's developing economies lure home high-tech pioneers trained in the U.S
Article Abstract:
Asia's 'four dragons,' Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan, are intensifying their efforts to move into high-tech industries such as computers, telecommunications, new materials and industry automation. Officials in the four countries view natives with advanced degrees who are working in high-tech industries in the West as a possible means to leapfrog over decades of development into a technologically advanced future. Taiwan has been especially successful in its efforts to lure talented people back home, where many returnees have started new businesses. Asian recruiters say that in spite of some successes, their part of the world still suffers from a net loss of skilled human resources.
