Thrift industry
Article Abstract:
Good economic conditions and high lending activity are continuing to be beneficial for the thrift industry in 1999, and many thrifts are broadening their services to items other than home loans. The Year 2000 computer activities have slowed industry consolidation in 1998 and 1999, but this may change in the near future, and there is a growing prevalence to more online services for mortgages. Stocks in the thrift industry are not highly ranked for performance, but there are several which offer good potential through the years 2002-2004.

Article Abstract:
Good credit quality, strong loan demand, and interest rate reductions by the Federal Reserve Board have had positive effects for the profit margins and earnings in the thrift industry in 1998, and this also augers well for 1999. The acquisition and merger activity within the industry during the 1990s held the attention of many investors, although this has lessened. Thrift industry stocks are timely in 1999 and the larger thrifts, such as Dime Bancorp and Washington Mutual are expected to do well.
