Palm and Handspring offer welcome updates to hand-held models
Article Abstract:
Palm Inc.'s new Palm m500 personal digital assistant has an expansion slot on the back, a faster processor and a faster cradle for charging and synchronization. The screen on the Palm m505 is too dark, and not worth the extra cost. Handspring's new Visor Edge is more about style than substance, but does offer Fast Lookup, a new software feature. There is no built-in wireless modem on any of these.

Steve Jobs makes bold leap in PC design and advances an inch
Article Abstract:
Apple Computer's new iMac computers, available in a variety of colors, throw into relief the issue of the computer industry's backwardness in the physical design of the boxes which contain computer hardware, peripherals and storage. Most come in one color, beige, are connected to peripherals with a maze of cables, and require a process of booting up and shutting down that forces the user to sit and wait at the terminal before he can start doing his work or turn the switch to "off." Access to the motherboard for installation of memory or card upgrades involves a tedious process of removal of the cover from the main unit. The computer keyboard is burdened with keys which no longer serve any purpose. Fixes to these design flaws are simple, involving replacement of cables with infrared receivers and transmitters, and installation of hinged panels for access, to cite two examples. Even Apple is not immune from these failings. Rebooting a crashed iMac requires inserting a bent paper clip into a small hole. Apple continues to rely on a mouse design with only one button. In order for the computer industry to make these changes, consumers need to demand them and purchase from those who listen.

Tip no.1 for buying a personal computer: it's all about memory
Article Abstract:
Becuase of the excellent prices for PCs these days, there needs to be a more select criteria for buying a home computer than simply the price. Although these are factors one should always look at when buying a personal computer, it can't hurt to go over the list again. But, mostly, all you need to remember is to buy enough memory.
