Trading in Compaq seems to anticipate notebook-size unit
Article Abstract:
Compaq Computer Corp's stock is rising sharply in anticipation of the company's introduction of a notebook-sized microcomputer. Compaq is expected to make its introduction in mid-Oct, 1989. Compaq's stock rose by $6.25 on Oct 10, 1989, bringing the price to $104.875. That closing price is a record for the computer company. The new notebook computers weigh six pounds, feature a hard disk drive, and use standard 3.5-inch floppy disks. One of the new models will be drive by a 286 microprocessor. Prices have not be announced, but will probably be in the $3,500 range. The new Compaq unit will compete with leader Zenith Electronics Corp's MiniSport, which sells for about $2,000. The laptop computer industry, which includes the new notebook computers, is a $1 billion industry worldwide. It is the most rapidly growing segment of the microcomputer industry.

Compaq rolls out personal computers, claims they challenge minicomputers
Article Abstract:
Compaq Computer Corp introduces its new SystemPro 386 and 486 and the DeskPro 486 microcomputers, the first to use Extended Industry Standard Architecture (EISA). The SystemPro line is built around one or two Intel 80386 or 80486 microprocessors and are aimed at the growing market for network servers. The machines can act as a hub for up to 100 other microcomputers and will blur the line between micros and minicomputers. The low-end SystemPro, the 386-based model with a 240Mbyte hard disk, will cost $15,999, and a 840Mbyte disk version is priced at $25,999, making them the most expensive microcomputers available. The DeskPro 486 will start at $13,999. Analysts are optimistic about the new machines, but they question whether Compaq can continue to sell such expensive microcomputers through its usually retail dealers.

Compaq stock drops on poor forecast; stock plunges on the news of prediction
Article Abstract:
Compaq Computer Corp, the firm that has consistently outperformed the market, made a surprise announcement that it expects 4th qtr earnings to be below the year earlier qtr and below analysts' expectations as well. Reaction was quick on Wall Street, with investors hurrying to sell their shares. Compaq's stock plunged $16.875 to $89.125 a share. Earlier, Compaq officials tried to dampen the investment community's expectations by announcing that they had discovered flaws in Intel Corp's 80486 chips, therefore delaying the delivery of some of their products. But, expectations for the company had become unrealistic because Compaq had performed so well for so long.
