U S West plans to buy digital cellular system
Article Abstract:
U S West Inc is buying digital telecommunications equipment from Nortel, a joint venture of Motorola Inc and Northern Telecom Ltd, for use with its cellular telephone service. The purchase represents the first commercial purchase of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology by a commercial concern. The new system will be used in Seattle. Installation will begin late in 1993 and be complete and ready for use in 1994. Other cities slated for the new system are Denver and Minneapolis. CDMA is expected to compete with Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) digital technology, which McCaw Cellular Communications Inc will be installing in South Florida and New York City in late 1993. Also, Southwestern Bell plans to install TDMA systems in Chicago and Dallas. Standards are being developed for CDMA equipment but are not expected to be completed until mid-1993.
