U.S. to go back on Internet with Social Security benefits
Article Abstract:
The Social Security Administration will bring back a revised Internet site for users to project their future Social Security benefits, according to Federal officials. The move will have ramifications on Internet commerce, as the government has labored to coordinate user convenience and personal privacy. Two new key safeguards will bolster personal privacy when the Internet service returns by the end of 1997, according to John J. Callahan, the Acting Commissioner of Social Security. Web users can no longer access information on an individual's earnings history, although they may ascertain retirement or disability benefits. Second, those who wish to obtain future benefits information from Social Security's Internet site will require a 'verification code.' An initial, four-week Social Security agency Internet service that drew 71,000 requests was closed in Apr 1997 over privacy concerns.

Trapped in the Web without an exit
Article Abstract:
Web page technicians have developed ways to make consumers think they are going to a particular kind of Web site, but end up seeing something else, often times a come on for online pornography. One technique uses Java script to disable a browser's Back button, so the user must shut down their system to regain control. Another method deceives users of search engines by using metatags that refer to unrelated subjects, so their Hot Stuff site shows up on a stuffed animals search. Other tricks include coding links to launch a new browser window, registering "typo" versions of popular websites, and outright copying pages from popular sites, which then links to other unrelated content.
