US truckers; making overseas door-to-door service commonplace
Article Abstract:
The U.S. trucking industry is being forced to consolidate and reorganize. In 1979 there were 17,000 authorized carriers; in midyear '83 there were 27,000. Discounting on rates is the result. Many carriers are establishing international services as a strategy. Shippers want door-to-door service to European destinations. Competition is expected to intensify, not diminish.
