Unions must rethink loyalties
Article Abstract:
Michael OEConnor, senior assistant national secretary of the forestry division of the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union managed to convince union members to vote for the Howard government assuring that any decisions on forestry would not come at the expense of workers jobs, during the elections days. But the industrial relations legislation the Howard government is preparing would make life tougher of the unions especially in the private sector. The amendments of the Workplace Relations Amendment (Better Bargaining) Bill are discussed.

BHP's contract war
Article Abstract:
The Australian Federal Court is upholding Broken Hill Proprietary Company Ltd's right to sign individual contracts with workers at its Western Australian iron ore operations in Pilbara. Unions had alleged that BHP was trying to attract workers illegally away from collective agreements with individual contracts offering more money.
